The Best Golf School in Richmond, VA? Here's Why I Think It's at Independence

I'll be honest with you. When we went looking for a home for our first Top Tier Golf school in Virginia, I wasn't just looking for a pretty golf course. Pretty golf courses are everywhere. I was looking for a place where a golfer could actually get better... and a coach who cares about that as much as I do.
We found both at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, just west of Richmond. And the coach is Tim Wagner, PGA.
If you've been searching for a golf school in Richmond VA, golf lessons in Midlothian, or a 3 day golf school in Virginia that won't try to turn you into somebody you're not, this one's for you. I'm going to walk you through the course, the coach, and exactly how our system works before, during and after your school. No fluff. Just what you'd want to know before you trust somebody with your golf game.
Here's the thing most golfers have figured out by now. You can take lesson after lesson and still end up right back where you started. You get a tip, it works for a week, and then it's gone. That's not a you problem. That's a system problem. And fixing that is the whole reason Top Tier Golf exists.
Why Independence Golf Club Is Built for Getting Better
Independence opened in 2001 as a Tom Fazio design. In 2014 and 2015, architect Lester George redesigned it, and Golf Digest named it one of the Top 10 Best Remodels in the country. The championship 18 has Champion Bermuda greens that roll true, which matters a lot more than people think when you're trying to learn to read putts.
But here's what really sold me. Independence isn't just a golf course. It's a learning center. A lot of courses treat the practice area like an afterthought... a few mats and a bucket of balls. Independence went the other way. Golfers who play there regularly say the practice facilities and teaching setup rival any private club in Virginia, and after spending time on property, I agree.
Here's what you get to work with during a school:
- A full grass driving range so you're hitting off real turf, not mats that hide your bad contact
- Multiple putting greens and a chipping area where we can dial in the scoring shots
- The Mentor Course, a 9 hole par 3 short course also designed by Fazio. It's par 27 and plays around 1,280 yards from the back, which makes it perfect for wedge and short iron work under real course conditions
- The Bear Course, a separate 9 holes that gives us extra room to play
- Tim's North Campus teaching area, set apart from the main range, with heated indoor and outdoor bays and Foresight launch monitors. If you're the kind of golfer who hates being watched while you work on something new, you're going to love this
That short course is a big deal and I don't want you to skip past it. Most of the strokes you're losing are inside 120 yards. Being able to take what you just learned on the range and immediately test it on real par 3 holes is how a change actually sticks.
Off the course, the Jeffersonian style clubhouse and Tavern 19 make it easy to grab a bite and talk through your day. Independence also has on site lodging at Swink Lodge and Robins Cottage, so if you're coming in from out of town, you can stay right on property. It sits just west of Richmond, so it's an easy drive from Short Pump, Chesterfield and the rest of central Virginia.

Meet Tim Wagner, PGA: The Coach Behind Our Richmond Golf School
I've worked with a lot of golf pros. The great ones all have one thing in common. They listen before they talk. Tim is one of those guys.
Tim grew up in Venice, Florida, and spent pretty much every daylight hour as a kid at Lake Venice Golf Club. His high school varsity team was so stacked it went on to produce 5 PGA Professionals. After that he played professionally on the Moonlight Tour before earning his PGA Class A certification in 2009.
Over the last 20 years he's taught at some seriously good clubs across four PGA sections: Mid-Atlantic, Philadelphia, Metropolitan and South Florida. That includes:
- Birdwood Golf Course at Boar's Head Resort in Charlottesville, VA
- Fredericksburg Country Club in Fredericksburg, VA
- Timber Trails Golf Course at Lake Naomi Club in the Poconos
- South Fork Country Club in the Hamptons
- The Oaks Club in Sarasota, FL
Today Tim is the Director of North Campus and the Junior Golf Director at Independence. He's been named a Top 50 US Kids Golf Instructor, he coaches the club's PGA Jr. League, and he's certified in Golf Operations through the PGA's Certified Professional Program. He also lives right in Short Pump, so Richmond is home for him.
Why a great junior coach makes a great adult coach
This might surprise you, but it's one of my favorite things about Tim. Coaching kids forces you to get really good at two things... keeping it simple and being patient. You can't throw ten swing thoughts at a 9 year old. You find the one thing that matters, you explain it in a way that clicks, and you make it fun.
That's exactly what most adult golfers need too. Especially if you're a little older, a little stiffer than you used to be, and tired of being told to swing like a tour player.
One of our Independence students put it perfectly in his review. He was 69, a super senior club champion, and he wanted to get back to playing to his potential despite his age and some physical limits. What he loved was that Tim didn't try to reinvent his swing. He focused on the things that were in his control, and he left the school confident he could defend his title. That's Tim in a nutshell. Your body, your swing.
How Our 3 Day Golf School Actually Works
A great course and a great coach are only half of it. The other half is the system. This is where I've spent most of my time over the last few years, because I got tired of watching golfers have an amazing weekend and then lose it all two weeks later.
So we built the whole experience around one idea. The 3 day school isn't the program. It's the starting line. You're getting a full year long improvement plan, and the school is where it kicks off.
Before you get to Independence
The work starts the day you sign up. You get a concierge on our team who handles your booking and answers every question you have, so you're never left wondering what's next.
Then we build a pre-school routine just for you. That includes a mobility program from Matty Johnson, our mobility coach, so we know how your body actually moves before anyone talks about your swing. If your hips don't turn like they used to or your shoulder gets cranky, we want to know that up front... not halfway through day one.
During the school
This is where the TTG Method comes in. It's three simple phases. Pinpoint what's really costing you strokes. Adjust it in a way that fits your body. Refine it until it holds up on the course.
A few things make this different from a typical golf clinic:
- Max 4:1 student to instructor ratio. You get all the personal attention you need. You're never one of twelve people fighting for the coach's eye
- A real before and after. On day one Tim runs a 10 shot pattern test with one club and tracks every miss left, miss right, center strike and mishit. On day three you hit the same test with the same club. You don't have to guess if you got better. You'll see it
- Range, short game and course time. You'll work on the range, in the short game area, on the Mentor Course and out on the championship 18. After the practice day you get unlimited range and course access, plus extra play when tee times allow
- No cookie cutter swings. We take golfers of every age and ability, from newer players to low handicappers. Nobody gets forced into one model swing
After you go home
This is the part most golf schools skip, and honestly it's the part I'm most proud of. Every student gets a full year of follow-up coaching through CoachNow. You send in your swing, you get feedback, and you stay on track.
That year runs on a simple loop:
- Assess. Where am I starting?
- Practice. What am I working on?
- Track. What's happening during practice?
- Retest. Did I actually improve?
- Transfer. Is it showing up on the course?
And after every school, I personally call students. I ask one question... if you were the CEO of Top Tier Golf, what would you stop doing and what would you add? Then we actually use those answers. A lot of what you just read exists because a student told me to build it.
Who This Richmond Golf School Is For
You'll get a lot out of a school with Tim at Independence if any of this sounds like you:
- You've lost distance over the years and you want some of it back
- Your ball striking is all over the place and you can't tell what's causing it
- You've taken lessons before and the changes never stuck
- You've got a bad back, a stiff hip or a shoulder that limits you, and you're tired of hearing "just turn more"
- You're playing well and want to go from good to really good
Our average student is retired and fighting to stay consistent as the body changes. But we've had newer golfers and single digit players at Independence too. If you love the game and want to play it better, you belong here.
